![]() ![]() ![]() His most prominent theory on the origin of nationalism starts by regarding the transformation of society from an agrarian based economy and social structure to one centered around industrialism. For Gellner, nationalism is the imposition of a high culture on society replacing local, low cultures and most multiculturalism. From his experience as an ‘outsider’, he develops his first thoughts on identity politics and nationalism. Not feeling at home, Gellner went back to England to pursue an academic career. Upon his return to Prague after the war, he found a much changed city that had lost most of its multiculturalism. ![]() As a Jewish Czech, Gellner was forced to leave his home in 1939, fleeing Prague for England in the wake of Hitler’s takeover of Czechoslovakia. Gellner was introduced to nationalism and identity politics during his youth. Ernest Gellner is widely seen as one of the most important theorists in the study of nationalism. ![]()

Cottonwood r lee smith5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Just as she did in The Last Hour of Gann and make me seriously wish I could be the heroine to end up with him, has talent. But any writer that can make me see past this. I understand that many readers don't read, or like, science-fiction and won't be able to 'get' my 5-star rating for this book. I hadn't planned on reviewing this, but this is my first (and I think probably my only) 5-star review for this year. If you want to read a far better, more comprehensive review of this masterpiece, please read Pam's excellent review. Her job to update the census brings her in direct contact with the aliens, Sanford and his son, T'aki.Įvery now and then you come across an author who writes extraordinary stories, something so different, so captivating you want to write a review that does the book justice. Sarah Fowler arrives at Cottonwood, Kansas, as a social services liaison officer to the aliens. Herded into internment camps they eke out an existence living off the open landfill and meagre handouts from their hosts. Twenty years the yang'ti have lived in captivity on an alien planet after their spacecraft developed mechanical problems. They crawled over the trash, over the Heaps, picking through the human waste for treasures to put into sacks, into boxes, or even into their own mouths. ![]() There were hundreds of aliens in there, hundreds of them. ![]()

Books similar to verity5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() The feeling of loneliness they both give off is overwhelming and augments fear. ![]() de Winter finds an ally later on in Maxim’s sister, but she doesn’t understand everything either. No friend to confess and advise against mistakes. In both books the narrator gives off the feeling of being alone against the world. The fact that she cares for her mother is meant to make her a more complex character, flawed but loveable nonetheless. In both cases, they are portrayed as compassionate and loving to further the contrast between them and the wives.Įven more, in Lowen’s case, we can’t stop blaming her for becoming a mistress. She is paid for the menial tasks she does for the lady, as well as for companionship. Lowen cares for her mother in the months before she passes away due to cancer, while the second Mrs. de Winter are both caregivers before meeting the ones with whom they fall in love. ![]()

The Women's Room by Marilyn French5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It begins with the bum rap women have when they enjoy themselves in public in the company of men, giving them a “reputation.” It then moves on to the bum rap women get when they marry and become housewives, supporting their husbands in their careers, cooking and cleaning, and rearing children without any help. French’s book is a novel, but full of lengthy musings and speeches about feminist theory and the power struggles and relationships (sometimes indistinguishable from one another) between men and women. Published in 1978, The Women’s Room seems to be in the same class of feminist literature that gave rise to The Second Sex and The Feminine Mystique. After attending our event, we browsed the shelf and among the books I selected was Marilyn French’s The Women’s Room. They receive donations from patrons, and duplicates or books they don’t want end up on a 5 shekel shelf outside the library. ![]() Besides offices, event and conference rooms, and a small radio studio, the AACI has a very good English library. A couple of months ago, the Cap’n and I went to an event at the new, beautiful AACI (Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel) offices in Talpiot. ![]()

Somewhere in the Deep by Tanvi Berwah5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Our last task of the semester was to organize our lab and clean up from our experiments over the course of the semester. This morning, I woke up early for a 9am meeting with my organic chemistry lab group. ![]() So now that we’ve gotten a handle on what I’m facing for the week, let’s get into how I spend my time! My other task is a French paper which isn’t due until next week. It’s definitely going to be a long weekend. I’ve got my biochem exam on Saturday night (!!) and my physics exam on Sunday morning, with less than 12 hours between them. I have two exams, one in biochemistry and the other in physics… and can I just say that their scheduling has me more than a bit frustrated. I’m preparing for my own while also thinking about packing and moving back home for the summer. It’s May, so it’s officially the season of college final exams. ![]()
